Live @Academy, Manchester 27/10/10

Normally when a few bands go on tour, there is a hidden rivalry between the headline act and the support act. On this tour it wouldnt be fair to put one band as a headliner. The reason for this is that they are both brutal, passionate, stunning to watch and simply cant be outdone. This is probably why they are co-headlining the show. They cant be separated whatsoever.
After seeing the ‘pretty’ colours and stunning stage set of Avenged Sevenfold, it was time to turn to Stone Sour. A word that is used a lot to sum up bands is probably, raw. On this occasion, I think it fits the bill. Corey and the rest of Stone Sour are like a diamond in the rough, and they use that to their advantage. With plenty of people always going to compare them to Slipknot, there is such a chasm of difference between the fancy drum risers and 9 masked men destroying the stage. This seems like a release to Corey, a dark, raw release that gives them all something different and unique. That is one of the many reasons that I like Stone Sour, because there is a different focus and energy that no other band can immitate.

Stone Sour is always going to be about Corey in which his experience and energy flows in to every person here, weirdly though, during the set, someone decides its a good idea to throw a shoe…which misses him and results in some big banter and a poigniant comment to the shoe thrower… “You can’t fucking touch me”. I hope the guy in the crowd felt like a dick. He now had one shoe missing and he had been humiliated by Corey Taylor.
Through out the set, the entire band were mesmerising, whether is was Roy Mayorga and his unique ‘tub-thumping’ style or Shawn Economaki’s blistering bass lines tearing the crowd a preverbial ‘new one’ they were again on fine form.
The crowd participation for both bands was superb, but the stand out track for me was ‘Made of Scars’ when the crowd joined in with the chorus. Even Corey seemed genuinely pleased with the response.
My only disappointment for the night was knowing that its just over a whole week until they play Manchester again, and you know what? They will both kick ass yet again. Make sure you dont miss it!
Many thanks to James Milne for saving my ass and shooting the gig! Legend \m/
