Illuminatus – Glasnost

Illuminatus arent the sort of band you can just pigeonhole into just one genre, what these guys do is they bring a whole bunch of influences and blend them all into one, they aren’t the type of band that likes to follow the rule book and jump on to a bandwagon, far from it, on this 11 tracker the Nottingham 4-piece like to create their own rule book, the one that consists of heavy hitting drums, heavy chugging guitars and soaring melodies.

It starts off with the title-track and immediately you could hear the band sounding like they mean serious business, ‘Murdocracy’ carries on that feat as the heavy guitars take dominance which sets the tone for the album. ‘Cave In’ showcases the bands more melodic side and also vocalist Julio Taylors impressive vocal skills which are reminiscent of Richard Patrick from Filter before an almighty riff-infested climax. ‘You Never Know What This Means’ and ‘Red’ slow things down andtake a more uplifting route, and the result is excellent.

Towards the end of the album, the band take another twist in their songwriting skills as the instrumental ‘Gosling’ makes its presence known, accompanied by the darksounding guitars and piano which then continues on to ‘Clarity’ which is one of the highlights of the album, album closer ‘Wolves’ rounds off the proceedings with the ‘Chevelle’-esque riffery, ending the album how it begun.

Overall this album is fantastic, great songwriting throughout and keeps the listener occupied on each track by diversifying their songs and not conforming to the age-old cliche that many bands use by making each song sounding similar than the last, this band needs to be heard sooner rather than later, if they can come up with albums like this in the future, surely bigger things will definitely be on the horizon.

Illuminatus will be playing Download Festival at Donington Park, Leicestershire in June, miss them at your peril!!!
