Exeter 4-piece Idiom have achieved so much in recent years, bagging a slot in festivals such as Bloodstock, The Bulldog Bash and even Hard Rock Hell Ibiza, and have shared the stage with many acclaimed bands such as Skindred, (Hed) PE, 36 Crazyfists, Exit Ten and even From Autumn To Ashes. The aforementioned bands serve as a little clue as to what Idiom sound like on this 6-trck E.P. ‘We can’t all be superheroes’.
‘Beast Of Bodmin’ begins proceedings with a heavy Nu Metal like riff alongside Matt Sharland’s very impressive vocals, rather than resorting to the usual ‘verse, chorus, verse, chorus’ routine, they like to bring in clever time-changes and sound very unpredictable which is to great to hear these days as you dont get many bands doing this.
The unpredictablity continues on to ‘King Of Your Own Throne’ which drummer Dan Harrison very cleverly uses his side-snare in the middle of an opening stop-start riff, which sounds brilliant almost Therapy? sounding, but the music itself is once again excellent, Guitarist Kris Gibbs is on fine form throughout this CD, especially on ‘Placebo’ where he produces some of the E.P’s most awesome sounding riffs. Towards the end of the Cd the band take a more Alternative Metal route on ‘True Story’ they rely less on stop-start riffery and have come up with something almost epic sounding.
It ends with the title-track, and the band have brought back the unpredictabilty shown on the first few tracks, starting off with a Rage Against The Machine like riffand an impressive middle section which bands like Incubus would wish they’d have done in their earlier works. It finishes off in stunning fashion with an ending that’s sure to get people shouting along to in their live set. This band are definately the ones to watch out for in the future, if they keep releasing belters like this E.P.they are sure to get even bigger than ever!
